Grizzlies win sales battle
Coming to this point, I wrote that if the Grizzlies want a chance, it will come on sales. When Tyus Jones goes on offense, the Grizzlies look like the tightest team in the NBA. The Warriors, meanwhile, were 29th in the turnover rate. Memphis needed these additional possessions. Well it gets her. It’s almost halftime and the Grizzlies have just three turnovers compared to 13 for the Warriors.
Also Tyus Jones: 10 points, six assists, zero turnover. Jones’ best quality is that he rarely does anything bad. He’s defensive in all the right places. He doesn’t turn it around. He just doesn’t make mistakes. He also adds a lot of good tonight.

Grizzlies make small gains early on
I couldn’t ask for a better start from the Grizzlies. Not only are they 7-of-12 of 3, but they outplay the Warriors in areas they don’t have this series. They have double the rebounds (22-11) and nearly double the points in the paint (22-12) about halfway through the second quarter. At the start of Game 5, they were averaged past (49.0-43.5) and outperformed in paint (55-47).

Warriors in search of answers
The Warriors team up with Draymond Green and Kevon Looney. I think this is the first time in this series. They separated them due to distance concerns but Mike Brown is looking for a defensive response tonight.

Brandon Clarke spotted
It seems that Brandon Clarke from the Timberwolves series has appeared.
Clarke hasn’t done much in this series since Game 1, but he’s all over the glass and slashed the Warriors’ zone defenses. He’s finding space everywhere, passing Golden State and has 11 points ahead with four rebounds, all offensive.
Grizzlies lead 53-36 with 7:06 in the first half.

Marcus Smart on the Celtics’ emotions after the defeat: “We were hot just because we know we did it to ourselves. Nobody else. Take the blame. But now the time has come.

Interesting stats about Memphis
The Grizzlies have led at the end of all five first quarters of this series, and they have also led in every game of this series by double digits.

Tough track for Jordan Poole; Grizzlies up to 38-28
Rough sequence for Jordan Poole to end a poor first quarter for the Warriors. Turns over in traffic, then commits a well-aimed transition foul while Memphis is on the bonus. Gives the Grizzlies a free point. Memphis scored 38 points in the first quarter without Ja Morant. Warrior below 10.

Celtics slowed the pace and it cost them
It was remarkable to see the Celtics beat the Bucks in their own game all night by dominating the paint and fast break and then slowing the game to a crawl in the fourth quarter as Milwaukee eliminated the deficit. Jrue Holiday had had a defensive sequence to finish it for ages and Bobby Portis dominated the offensive glass as the Celtics went small, but they let go of the rope as they have rarely done this season.

Warrior launchers do not click
That’s down 7 for this Warriors starting lineup, which also includes Jonathan Kuminga to open Game 5. Didn’t work in three games. They are a cumulative minus of 21 for the series. I would expect Otto Porter Jr. to open the second half again.

Hot start for Jaren Jackson Jr.; Grizzlies lead 18-11
Jaren Jackson Jr. was super down on his shooting performance after Game 4 as he shot 0-to-7 deep in San Francisco. But “don’t worry,” he said. “I’ll get over it.” He wasn’t wrong. He’s made his first four shots of the game, including a couple of 3s, and has 10 points in front of goal. The Grizzlies lead the Warriors at 7 a.m.

Free throws are important
David Aldridge: One thing the Van Gundy brothers ALWAYS talk about at the end of a show is the importance of blocking missed free throws. And there it is.
Jay King: oh my word Bobby Portis with the second chance bucket after a missed Giannis free throw to put the Bucks 11.4 seconds ahead. I was wondering if the Bucks missed an opportunity by benching Brook Lopez just in case Giannis missed one, but no, Portis took care of it.

Bucks-Celtics reminds me of something
This series has LOTS of ’04 Pistons pacers – except each team scores 100 points, not 100 combined.

Giannis with clutch… 3?!
Giannis Antetokounmpo, blood trickling near the corner of his right eye, drains a huge 3 to keep the game at 105. He has 39 points and 11 rebounds, but who knew a 3-pointer – only his second of the night – would be his biggest bucket yet?
